Our History

Ray FIANDER and Lee TOVELL started the firm on 1st January 1977. Lee had just come out of Whittaker Bailey (which had become Price Waterhouse in Southampton) because he was “too young” to be a partner! So he started on his own in 1976 operating from 20 Brunswick Place. Ray had come to Southampton to start a branch office for Barter Durgan & Muir (a Petersfield based firm which is still operating) but left to start his own practice in 1974. They met through membership of Southampton Round Table and realized that sole practice was not the way forward for either of them and so joined forces on 1st January 1977. They tossed a coin as to the way the firm’s name would read. As ‘Fiander’ came up heads ‘Fiander Tovell’ was named.

Andrew Quicke joined the practice in 1986 and together the then three partners started to build the practice we have become today. The opportunities that we all have today are a result of where Lee, Ray and Andrew positioned themselves in the market and the determination to remain independent. None of the competitor firms from that era remain in their original form.

From the outset there was a philosophy to bring through young talent and to ensure that the practice developed its own succession plans. Paul, Cathy and Lisa are testament to this, as they all started their accountancy careers at FT. Andy and more recently Chris and Deborah have joined from other firms, but all with a background in similar environments. Ray retired in 2000 and Lee followed three years later. They remain great friends of the firm.

The firm has grown and changed as client service requirements have altered over time. But the basic objectives and underlying ethos of the firm remains and the current director team will ensure this continues. We always consider ourselves extremely lucky to have had such great staff and group of clients over the years without which none of this would have been able to be achieved.

What our clients say…

‘’Finding the right team to engage in complex financial and tax matters when selling a business is imperative. I initially met Cathy 3 years ago by introduction from one of our mutual clients, but have gone on to recommend her many times and worked with her on several M&A transactions since. It goes without saying that Cathy is a consummate professional who knows her area very well, but rarely do you find accountancy experts who are able to integrate with the commercial and legal functions of M&A in the way that Cathy does and be prepared to go the extra mile to get the deal done (a recent point in case where Cathy stayed with the team through the weekend assisting in the negotiations to help get the deal done). I would recommend Cathy without hesitation, she is part of my ‘go to’ team.’’
