Andrew Jackson is the Chartered Tax Advisor leading corporate tax at Fiander Tovell, specialising in corporate tax compliance, mergers and acquisitions, tax audits and strategic tax planning. Known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to simplify complex tax matters, Andrew helps clients navigate the evolving and challenging corporate tax landscape.
His expertise extends across a broad spectrum of business tax issues including capital allowances, R&D tax relief, VAT, payroll and stamp taxes. A member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Andrew contributes to several of its technical committees and regularly collaborates with HMRC and the Treasury on tax policy development.
The Perfect Fit
His journey into the world of corporate tax seems almost like fate. After university, unsure of his next steps, a recruitment agent mentioned an opening in the local tax department of one of the Big 6 firms (as they were called at the time). Andrew was obviously curious about the role, but the reply from the recruiter was simple: “Why don’t you go to the interview and find out?”
“It turned out to be corporate tax, and probably the perfect role for me,” Andrew reflects.
What Clients Can Expect
Clients can trust that Andrew will always consider multiple solutions, ensuring the best approach is always chosen. “I always think about different ways of getting from A to B. One might remove a barrier, another might hit a pitfall, but both help you decide if the obvious route is sensible.”
What sets Andrew apart is his ability to act as a ‘translator and facilitator’: “I try to understand what people are doing and translate that into HMRC language, making sure both HMRC and the client are aligned.” This commitment to clear communication by removing complex jargon puts his clients at ease, underscoring that for Andrew, it’s not just about saving on taxes – it’s about reducing stress and uncertainty.
When working with Andrew, clients will first discuss broader objectives before diving into tax specifics. “I’ll ignore the numbers at first and focus on wider issues.” By the end, clients can expect to gain clarity and confidence in their position, with a clear understanding of the steps ahead.
Balancing Complexity and Solutions
Andrew finds satisfaction in the dual nature of his work. “There are two main parts: understanding how complex rules fit with complex commercial situations, and helping people to get solutions to their problems,” he explains.
The most challenging aspect, however, is staying ahead of constant changes in tax laws. “However much you think you know, there’s always the possibility that there’s another bit of legislation, or case law, or HMRC practice that affects the particular situation you’re looking at.”
To keep up with the ever-changing nature of tax, Andrew relies on a mix of reading news updates, discussing developments with colleagues and staying involved with the Institute of Taxation’s technical committees. “And, of course, having people ask me questions I’ve not come across before.”
Tax Career Tips
Looking to pursue a career in tax? Andrew has some invaluable advice and insights into the tax world for you. “Make sure you understand the logic that underpins the tax rules. There always is some logic there – no matter how baffling the result is at first glance – but the trick is understanding what it is and why it differs from common sense.” This deep understanding is essential, as it helps ensure the rules are applied correctly.
Before beginning a career in corporate tax, it’s important to know what you’re getting into. According to Andrew, a common misconception in the corporate tax world is that tax professionals are solely focused on reducing tax liabilities. “It’s often fairly obvious what the tax liability ought to be, so my job is making sure that the client isn’t accidentally exposed to paying more than they ought to.” The real challenge, he explains, is avoiding mistakes that add unnecessary tax charges.
A Unique Perspective
Andrew has ADHD and is on the autistic spectrum, which shapes his approach to life and work. “I’m really interested in understanding how things work, making sure they work well and helping others understand what’s going on. Once I get into a problem, I don’t like leaving it unresolved.”
Outside of work, Andrew enjoys Morris dancing, live-action roleplaying and delving into history and philosophy. As a child, he was drawn to the sciences, not much of a history or English fan and certainly not sporty. “As an adult, I’m known for my writing skills, knowledge of history and ability to run long distances in heavy armour. I’m not sure how or why that changed.”
Beyond dancing, singing and hitting people with a sword (sometimes all at once), Andrew is dedicated to providing expert guidance in corporate tax compliance, mergers and acquisitions, tax audits and strategic planning, helping clients navigate complex tax challenges with confidence.
